For years, homeowners in the Winchester area asked us to install both vinyl siding and fiber cement, and for years we said yes to both. After a lot of jobs, a lot of callbacks, and a long look at what actually holds up over time, we changed our answer. Winchester Roofing now installs ProVia CedarMAX insulated vinyl siding, and we do not install fiber cement anymore. Here is the honest reasoning behind that decision.
Fiber cement siding, the kind most people know as Hardie board, is a real product with real strengths. It is heavy, it resists fire well, and it has a certain look some homeowners want. But it comes with a maintenance schedule that does not go away. It needs to be repainted every several years to protect it from moisture. The cut edges absorb water if they are not sealed properly during installation, and a poor seal can mean rot years down the road, often hidden until it is a bigger problem. It is also brittle in cold weather and can crack during shipping, handling, or installation itself, before your home even sees its first winter.
CedarMAX is ProVia’s insulated vinyl siding, built with a rigid foam backing behind an authentic cedar woodgrain texture. A few things about it changed our minds.
It never needs to be painted. CedarMAX is backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty against fading, chalking, cracking, and peeling, so there is no repainting cycle to plan around, ever.
It is not “flimsy vinyl.” The foam backing gives CedarMAX roughly five times the impact resistance of standard non-insulated vinyl siding. That matters for the same reasons impact resistance always matters: baseballs, hail, the occasional rock from a mower.
It insulates your whole wall, not just the parts between the studs. Wall studs make up close to a quarter of an average home’s exterior wall, and they are usually the least insulated part of it. CedarMAX’s foam backing runs continuously across the entire wall surface, studs included.
It is quieter. Independent testing found CedarMAX can reduce outside noise transmission by close to 39 percent.
It installs cleaner and more predictably. It is lighter than fiber cement, does not require special blades or cutting precautions, and takes less time on your home, which means less time your house sits open during the job.
We are not going to pretend there is no tradeoff. Fiber cement has a reputation for fire resistance that vinyl does not match, and some homeowners simply prefer its weight and feel. If that is what matters most to you, we will tell you that plainly. But for the large majority of homeowners we talk to, once they hear about the warranty, the insulation, and the fact that they will never pick up a paintbrush for their siding again, the decision gets easy.
